New slashdot feature?

Since I do most of my web reading through an RSS Aggregator, I JUST noticed this cool feature of Slashdot.  When did they introduce previews of items that didn’t make it to the main page.  Great idea, in my opinion.  No doubt motivated by Digg’s success.  Competition is grand.

Personal Portals. Desktop Gadgets.

Microsoft will allow gadgets to be dragged and dropped back and forth between live.com and the desktop (operating system). And they aren’t waiting for Vista – an update to Windows XP will be coming soon that will allow this drag and drop functionality. — Michael Arrington

That is crushing news for a lot of fledgeling personal portal companies.  Still, it sounds WONDERFUL to me as a user.

Iamalpha.com from AOL also looks interesting – it’s going for the “lots of mini dhtml gadgets that interact with other services” thing, too.  If you can’t figure out how to launch it, go here and click “go play”.

And, hey, am I the only one around here that remembers DoDots?  They did what Konfabulator does before Konfabulator did it.   Say that 10 times fast!

OH!  And WHAT IS UP with web.archive.org?  I’m not allowed to see past incarnations of the DoDots.com site because the current domain owner forbids it?  Good lord.

Robots.txt Query Exclusion.

We’re sorry, access to http://www.dodots.com has been blocked by the site owner via robots.txt.

Hack: Installing a Mic in a Palm TX

This is a really cool idea.  Apparently, the TX has two contacts on the hotsync connector that are intended for attaching a microphone.  Gregte already installed one in his TX.  I use my Razr for recording quick notes to myself, so this isn’t useful for me right now, but it definitely looks like fun!

This Yahoo! Search issue…

As many have already noted, it would be a HUGE mistake for Yahoo! to give up on search.  Apparently, some of the Yahoo! team agree:

This commitment to being the best should be crystal clear from our investments in talented people, research, innovation and new products. Believe it or not, we are still in the early days of search. As all of us at Yahoo! agree, we’re in it for the long haul, and we’re in it to win.

Seriously.  Flickr, Del.icio.us, and now, maybe, Digg?  They are building an arsenal for one of next revolutions in search.  I would like to see more effort in the direction of personalized results, though.  Rollyo style, maybe or filtering results by your blogroll.
