Questions about the Nokia n800 Internet Tablet
Now that we have a ton of information about the device and some of us have had the opportunity to use one this weekend, the Internet Tablet irc community has moved on to a new set of questions:
- 1. What portions of Internet Tablet OS 2007 (the os running on the n800) will make it back to the old 770? What does the future hold for the 770? Will herring/sardine (the next version of the Internet Tablet OS) appear on both the 770 and the n800?
- 2. What is the CPU model on the 800? ANSWER: Jarek points to the newly updated wiki for this info. “The processor is a 330-MHz, ARM11-based Texas Instruments (TI) OMAP 2420.”
- 3. Can the USB port power peripherals?
- 4. Are the SD ports SDIO compatible?
- 5. Are the SD ports HDSD compatible?
Do you have other questions for the folks at Nokia?
UPDATE: Some great answers in the comments section.
Also, Dave, in the comments, points us to updated tech specs on Nokia’s site.
Updates on the Nokia N800
- New Application browsing/installing interface! ferenc joined us in #maemo on freenode. ferenc appears to be an official developer for the Nokia Internet Tablet platform. One of the big complaints about the 770 has always been the Application Manager interface required for installing apps. Nokia seems to be resolving this for the 770 and the 800 with a web based interface with easy “click here to install” buttons for each app. The draft version of that interface is here.
- Homebrew Developers for the 770 will be getting a huge discount on n800s.
- Nokia officially announced the new dev platform for the n800, bora. Currently, 770 users can’t upgrade to this platform, but I’m guessing that’s coming soon.
- Chippy put up a revised set of specs for the n800.
- As CarryPad is reporting, Milhouse on the #maemo freenode irc channel just discovered that the n800 is available in the Nokia Germany online store.
- I posted some information about the Opera and Flash specs for the n800.
- cman74 on Internet Tablet Talk forums revealed that 4GB SD cards work in the n800. With 2 slots, that means 8GB of flash memory to work with. More if the n800 actually can handle HDSD!
- VidConvert has been tested and works for the n800. VidConvert is an online free service that transforms videos to a format compatible with the Nokia 770 and n800.
- The n800 got slashdot exposure via linux-watch.
- The video I put up last night is getting a lot of visibility!
The Nokia N800 Internet Tablet supports 4GB SD Cards?!?!?!
Found this gem on the InternetTabletTalk Forums:
“And as I mentioned before, the N800 is recognizing a 4 GB SD card. I might possibly pick up an 8 GB just out of curiosity to see if it works.”
Opera changes on the Nokia n800. Compared to the Nokia 770.
The Nokia n800:
Opera Version “8.5 Internal” Build “2.0.31”
The flash version tester says 7.0.0.
The Nokia 770:
Opera Version “8.02 Internal” Build “1.1.50”
The flash version tester says 6.0.82.
The opera.ini file is largely the same between the two versions, however the n800’s cache settings are much higher.
Nokia N800 Video – The first of many
This video addresses some questions brought up via email and irc. In this video, you’ll see every angle of the N800 Internet Tablet. You’ll also watch it boot, try to play a YouTube video and visit the control panel. At the bottom of this post I linked to the original 50MB WMV, also.
